U16s win County Championship.

Blackrock captured the Under 16 Premier competition for the second time in three years when they defeated a very committed Carrigaline team under lights at Pairc Ui Rinn.

In a perfect setting for hurling, as the russet leaves in the approaches around the Pairc continue to showcase the finest Autumn in living memory, this game, played before a large crowd proved to be close and entertaining right through. The stick work was of the highest quality and some brilliant individual displays again confirmed the view that there is little wrong with the actual quality of Cork underage hurling.   Click here for match report

November 2007

Under 14 City League Final.

Blackrock 2 - 9 Carrigaline 0 - 4

at Redmonds on Saturday 17th November

Blackrock's 1993 panel completed a clean sweep of all the Cork hurling titles on offer when they defeated a resilient Carrigaline outfit in terrible conditions at rain lashed Redmonds on Saturday 17th November.

Having annexed the Cork Feile title, Cork City Championship and Cork County Championship, this panel completed the historic set when they ran out comfortable winners in the League final.

In the dreadful conditions for hurling, the Rockies spurned gilt edged chances in the first half as a result of poor finishing combined with a resolute defence by Carrigaline. At the interval Blackrock led by 0 - 4 to 0 - 1.

Eddie Murphy, the referee is deserving of the very highest praise for his total control over the game and ensuring the safety of the players. in spite of the weather conditions.

The sheer class of this Blackrock team was on display in the second half and two goals from Shane O'Keeffe spurred the Rockies to a deserved victory.

Cian O'Halloran was also extremely unlucky when following a Maradona like solo through the Carrigaline defence his shot cannoned off the upright.

Carrigaline defended magnificently all through, the work of Cillian Sweeney at midfield, who put over all their scores as well as young Stephen Dwane at centre back was noteworthy

Dylan Stokes was again majestic at centre back, while Eoin Smith and David O'Farrell worked hard throughout. John Fitzgerald has become an immense hurler and his no nonsense hurling is brilliant to behold.

In truth, the entire 25 member panel have all contributed to a great year of hurling for them. Their comeback from three final defeats in three years earlier in their careers is all the more impressive.

The outstanding work of the manager JP Devine, coach Andy Creagh as well as James O'Brien, Richie Stokes, David and Brian Cashman has contributed enormously to the development of these young Rockies, who have had a tremendous year.

Under 14 Hurling League Semi-Final

Blackrock 1 - 15 Na Piarsaigh 1 - 6

at Na Piarsaigh's grounds on Saturday 10th November

There was some excellent hurling on display at Na Piarsaigh's grounds on Saturday 10th November as these old rivals shaped up to one another in the 2007 league semi-final. The match was much closer than the final scoreline suggests.

The Rockies playing with the aid of a strong wind were extremely lucky to be just two points ahead at the interval due to the strength of the Na Piarsaigh challenge. They can thank goalie Paul Delaney who pulled off a crucial save to deny Na Piarsaigh a certain goal just before half time. In this half players such as Jamie Ahern at centre back, Alan Dennehy at centre field and Liam Connery at mid field were excellent for the north side club.

However the resilient Rockies are not county champions for nothing and also matched their great rivals with some tremendous team and individual displays. David O'Farrell at centre field was outstanding, while John Fitzgerald was a colossus in winning ball.

The Rockies played very well against the wind when the game in the balance. A goal from Shane O'Keeffe gave the Rockies an advantage they never lost and they piled on the points during a period of sustained pressure in the second half.

Na Piarsaigh's fought back in a determined manner and the Blackrock full-back line of Eoin Smith, Stephen O'Brien and Brian Dineen emerged as the heroes of the hour, when displaying experience which belied their age, repulsed wave after wave of attacks.

Blackrock now move on to play Carrigaline in the final of the 2007 Under 14 league.

October 2007

Under 14 City Championship Final.

Blackrock 3 - 13 Na Piarsaigh 3 - 8

There was some very good hurling in this game played at Carrigaline on Saturday 20th October. The Rockies raced into an early lead with some excellent skillwork and led at one stage by 0 - 7 to 0 - 2, with the aid of four points from placed balls by Kevin O'Keeffe and two from Shane O'Keeffe. David O Farrell and Andy O'Connell also chipped in a point a piece. Exchanges were tough, but the standard was high and the hurling free flowing. With Cian Buckley in sparkling form at corner forward and Liam Connery driving forward, Na Piarsaighs fought back and Anthony Dennehy grabbed a goal to bring the sides level just before the interval.

The score was Blackrock 0 - 8 Na Piarsaighs 1 - 5

Piarsaighs went ahead following a free early in the second half, however Chris Aherne somehow turned inside the Na Piarsaigh defence to convery an amazing goal. By the 40th minute the Rockies were 2 - 8 to 1 - 7 ahead when a pin point pass from David O'Farrell found Kevin O'Keeffe running free and he doesn't miss gilt edged opportunities. O'Keeffe added a free a minute later to put 5 points in it.

When Cian O'Halloran fired in a goal on the 45th minute, it looked like curtains for the Northside lads. True to Na Piarsaigh tradition they stormed back into the game with goals from Cian Buckley and Andrew Moynihan. The rampant David O'Farrell however fought back and his two classic points kept daylight between the sides. John Fitzgerald made an outstanding contribution to the victory, while the irrepressible Chris Ahern added two majestic points to close the scoring.

Na Piarsaigh fought to the end in a contest that was managed in an authoritative and sensible manner by referee Michael Harrington. However this group of Rockies, steeled by early career defeats have become very difficult to break down and their captain Dylan Stokes added the Henry O'Mahony trophy to complete the double of County and City Championships for this extremely talented side.

Blackrock: Paul Delaney, Eoin Smith, Stephen O'Brien, Brian Dineen, Rory Burke, Dylan Stokes, Darragh O'Keeffe, David Meaney, David O'Farrell,(0 - 3) Cian O'Halloran,(1 - 0) John Fitzgerald, Andy O'Connell,(0 - 1) Kevin O'Keeffe, (1 - 5, 5f) Shane O'Keeffe,(0 - 2), Sean Cantwell, Chris Ahern ( 1 - 2), Ciaran Moore, James Tyner, Cian Scannell, Niall Foley, Chris Hayes, Cian Cavanagh, Sean Holland, Dean Murphy.

Under 14 Championship.

played in Douglas on Sunday 30th September

Blackrock 5 - 12 Douglas 1 - 5.

This game was won and lost early on when Blackrock fired in four goals in the first half and effectively the game was over by the interval when Blackrock led by 4 - 7 to 0 - 3. David O'Farrell was in brilliant form at centre field and scored three lovely points while up front Andy O'Connell was unstoppable as he fired in two goals and a point for good measure in the first half.

Some fine goalkeeping from James Tyner and defensive play from Brian Dineen and Stephen O'Brien ensured no easy passage for the Douglas forwards. Up front Chris Ahern scored two opportunist goals while Shane O'Keeffe grabbed a goal and Cian O'Halloran did some excellent work.

For Douglas Paul Beale was the outstanding player on view, while Alan Cadogan and Shane O'Donoghue played well. Josh Khra scored some nice points near the end while Scott O'Reilly converted a good goal in the 58th minute.

Scorers; Andy O'Connell, 2 - 4, Chris Ahern 2 - 0, Kevin O'Keeffe 0 - 5 (f), David O'Farrell 0 - 3, Shane O'Keeffe 1 - 0.

Under 14 Premier County Final.

Blackrock 3 - 8 Midleton 0 - 5

played at Carrigaline on Saturday 28th July

This was an outstanding performance from Blackrock who gave a comprehensive display full of determination, effort and first time hurling to capture the Hilser trophy in appalling conditions in this Premier under 14 final played at Carrigaline on Saturday 28th July.

This was a great team performance in which every one of the Rockies played their part however players such as Darragh O'Keeffe, Sean Holland, Rory Burke and Andrew Murphy put in an extraordinary effort over the hour and never allowed Midleton to settle.

The sides were evenly matched in the first quarter; a brilliant pass from full forward Niall Foley allowed Kevin O'Keeffe to bang in a goal in the 15th minute to put the Rockies in the driving seat. A series of 5 points from Kevin O'Keeffe, Stephen Murphy, Eoin Smith, Andy O'Connell and John Fitzgerald before Niall Foley converted a goal chance on the stroke of half time allowed the Rockies to be 2 - 5 to 0 -3 ahead at the interval. Midleton's points came from Andrew Morrisey with two and James Murray.

The heavy under foot conditions and the driving rain ensured that scores were at a premium in the second half. Try as they might, Midleton could not penetrate the Rockies defence in which a determined Darragh O'Keeffe and the magnificent Dylan Stokes held sway. John Fitzgerald, Andy O'Connell and Ryan Dineen drove forward at every opportunity for Blackrock, while a brilliant James O'Leary and hard working Ian Kennefick countered at every opportunity for the Magpies.

Midleton however failed to score from play in the second half only managing two points from frees from Daniel Morrissey in spite of sustained pressure. Over the hour seven Blackrock forwards contributed scores while Daniel Morrissey contributed four of Midleton's five scores.

When Andy O'Connell scored a lovely point for the Rockies after 50 minutes to put three clear goals between the sides, there was no way back for Midleton.

Daniel Meaney added a goal in the final minutes and two frees from Kevin O'Keeffe completed the scoring. In truth, Blackrock appeared absolutely determined to win this game and gave a team performance which in its intensity and skillwork would be hard to equal. Referee Caoimhin White did a fine job.

Chairman of the Cork Bord na nOg, Tony O'Mahony presented the trophy to Blackrock captain Dylan Stokes after the game and also announced that Andy O'Connell had won the Mycro Sports man of the match award.

In his victory speech, Dylan praised all his team mates but reserved the highest commendation for the team manager JP Devine and mentors James O'Brien, Richard Stokes, Andy Creagh and David Cashman who have put in enormous work to developing the hurling skills of this Blackrock panel.

Lord Mayors Cup.

Blackrock 5 - 10 Na Piarsaigh 3 - 10.

at Church Road on Monday 23rd July

This was a real cracker of a game played at Church Road on Monday 23rd July with the result in doubt right up to the finish. The Rockies looked home and dry at the interval, leading by 3 - 8 to 0 - 7 with goals from Domhnall Cremin, Eoin O'Meara and Kevin O'Keeffe being the difference between the sides.

By the 40th minute the sides were level at 3 - 8 each after a tremendous fightback by the north side outfit. Domhnall Cremin put the Rockies back in front again with a fine goal and long range points from John Fitzgerald and Aaron Giltenan put some breathing room between the sides. When Eoin O'Meara fired in the final goal, only then could one predict a victor. Eoin Hickey along with Domhnall Cremin (2 - 2 and Eoin O'Meara (2 - 2) had outstanding games for the Rockies in what was a great achievement for this panel.

Under 14 County Semi-Final.

Blackrock 2 - 10 Sean Clarachs 0 - 6

played at Ballincollig on Saturday 21st July

Blackrock were well on top in this Under 14 game played at Ballincollig on Saturday 21st July in miserable weather conditions. It was a credit to both sides that they managed to overcome the weather conditions to provide an entertaining hurling game for the large crowd.

The Rockies raced into an early lead through points from John Fitzgerald, Kevin O'Keeffe and Andy O'Connell to a sole point from a free for Charleville from James O'Brien. The fast paced Blackrock forwards ran the Sean Clarachs defence ragged in this period and had too much firepower in their armoury with Andy O'Connell in particular firing over points from all angles. (He finished with 4 points from play)

He was ably assisted by Kevin O'Keeffe who contributed 1 - 5 from frees and play. James O'Brien added a further point from play for the Charleville side along with a free from James Butler. The Blackrock half back line under Dylan Stokes was dominant in the exchanges, while James Tyner at corner back cleared his defence regularly.

The half time score was Blackrock 1 - 8 Sean Clarachs 0 - 3.

A sustained period of attack from the Charleville side with Cian O'Donnell moving up from centre back and Shane Butler driving into the Blackrock defence left the scoreline at 1 -9 to 0 -6 by the 50th minute. The Rockies then upped their performance and Cian Scannell provided the match winning goal in the 55th minute with a brilliant shot from close in after John Fitzgerald went on a solo run.

Two penalties were awarded to the Rockies in the final minute, both of which were bravely saved at the expense of one point.

The Blackrock defence played well as a unit throughout the game, while Paul Delaney was very dependable in goal. Niall Foley, Rory Burke and Eoin Smith also put in some great work for the Rockies. Brian Kiely and Darren Hedderman were excellent also for the North Cork champions.

Blackrock: Paul Delaney; James Tyner, Shane O'Keeffe, Stephen O'Brien; Darragh O'Keeffe, Dylan Stokes, Rory Burke; David O'Farrell, Sean Holland; Eoin Smith, Kevin O'Keeffe, David Meaney; Cian Scannell, Chris Ahern, Ryan Dineen; Andy O'Connell, Niall Foley, John Fitzgerald.

County Under 14 Quarter final.

Blackrock 6 - 12 Carrigaline 4 - 7

played at Carrigaline on Sunday 14th July

This was an absolute cracker of a game played at Carrigaline on Sunday 14th July, with the lead changing back and forward in the final 15 minutes. A hat trick of goals from Shane O'Keeffe proved to be the difference in the end, following his move from the back line.

An early goal from Ryan Dineen put the Rockies in the driving seat early on. Kevin O'Keeffe added three further points while Ryan Dineen and Eoin Smith added one each to leave Blackrock ahead after 15 minutes by two goals. Several points from Robert O'Shea, who was dominating centre-field for Carrigaline and goals from Kevin Kavanagh, left the score at the interval at 2 - 4 to 1 - 5 to Carrigaline. It was no more than they deserved as they had at least 60% of the play however poor shooting cost them dearly.

The sides were still level at the 45th minute at 1 - 8 to 2 - 5. However both sides made changes and moved backs forward to gain an advantage. Dylan Stokes at centre back was dominating for the Rockies and grabbed a fine point on one of his sorties forward. The early influence of Jamie Coyne at centre forward for Carrigaline was curbed. David O'Farrell, who was very composed under pressure, played some fine ball into the forwards thus creating more space in a crowded area. A goal from John Fitzgerald now at full forward ensured parity 2 - 9 to 3 - 6 by the 50th minute.

Blackrock nosed in front from a "65" from Kevin O'Keeffe; however the Rockies failure to clear the ball from their defence proved costly when the South-East champions banged in a goal to leave them 2 points ahead. Then the floodgates opened and Shane O'Keeffe put away his three goals in quick succession while Chris Ahern added another as the Carrigaline defence finally cracked.

Late points from Ryan Dineen and Kevin O'Keeffe (who finished with a personal tally of 7 points) completed the Blackrock scoring. This was a hugely enjoyable game with both sides giving it everything and it could have gone either way right to the end. Paul Delaney was again assured in the Blackrock goal and inspired confidence in the defence in which Stephen Murphy had a fine game. A beautiful flick of the sliotar from a Carrigaline forward by James O'Brien saved a certain goal in the final minutes when the sides were level.

June 2007

Under 14 Championship Qualifiers.

played at Ballinlough on Friday 8th June

Blackrock 4 - 10 Na Piarsaigh 0 - 9

Despite the 6.30 throw in the summer heat seemed to affect the pace of this game as both teams appeared unable to convert chances.

Blackrock through Kevin O'Keeffe swung into a three point lead from frees in the initial 10 minutes, however Brian Dennehy pegged two back from frees by the 15th minute. Andrew Moynihan eventually levelled the game with the first point from play in the 16th minute.

Ryan Dineen put the Rockies ahead with their first point from play soon after and then corner forward Chris Ahern banged in a goal from behind the Piarsaigh defence to leave it at 1 - 4 to 0 -3 at 20 minutes. Again Brian Dennehy pointed two frees, however a crucial goal from Ryan Dineen in the 25th minute put the Rockies in the driving seat.

The Rockies led at the interval 2 - 7 to 0 - 7, the goals being the difference.

Na Piarsaigh tacked on 2 points early in the second half, however despite a period of complete dominance by Na Piarsaigh for the first 20 minutes of this half, by the expedient of crowding midfield, they managed to fire 8 wides in succession, including three scorable frees. That failure left the Rockies off the hook and it took a point from Rory Burke in the 22nd minute to open their second half account.

Fortune smiled on the Church Road outfit when a high ball from Kevin O'Keeffe deceived the Northsiders keeper, Robert O'Leary who might also have been blinded by the strong sun to wind up in the net. When Paul Delaney brought off a super save a few minutes later, it was game over. Chris Ahern then fired a ground ball to the net and further points from David O'Farrell and Kevin O'Keeffe completed the scoring.

The Blackrock full-back trio of Stephen Murphy, Shane O'Keeffe and Stephen O'Brien were very solid indeed and attacked the ball from start to finish, while Dylan Stokes was again majestic at centre-back. Kevin O'Keeffe with 1 - 6 (5f) put in a good hours work, while Chris Ahern took his two goals well. Ryan Dineen with 1 - 1 made a significant contribution while points from Alan Nolan, Rory Burke and David O'Farrell completed the scoring. Liam Connery for Na Piarsaigh at centre-back caught and cleared a lot of ball; however their usual point scoring forwards just did not take their chances when they had the Rockies on the rack. Two points in the second half will not win a game.

May 2007

Under 14 Championship Qualifiers.

Played at Church Road on Thursday 31st May 2007.

Blackrock 3 - 8 Douglas 1 - 8.

This was another highly entertaining game in the replay of the above competition, the third of a trilogy of games in the past few weeks between these two great hurling rivals.

Again very little in reality separated them at the end and if perhaps Douglas had taken their points from scorable frees the result would have been much closer. Blackrock scored an amazing 3 - 7 from play; Kevin O'Keeffe scored just one point from a placed ball, a "65". Douglas scored 0 -5 of their 1 - 8 total from frees. However, Blackrock conceded a total of 21 frees over the hour.

Ryan Dineen had the ball in the Douglas after two minutes and the Rockies never lost the lead after this. He also added two further quick points for good measure. Alan Murray doubled on an overhead ball to strike the net for Douglas soon afterwards. Kevin O'Keeffe following a good solo run then struck the net and followed with a point for the Rockies. Barry Martin converted frees to leave the score at 2 - 2 to 1 - 2 after 15 minutes.

Further exchanges of points from Ryan Dineen, Andy O'Connell and Kevin O'Keeffe and Barry Martin brought the half time score to 2 - 6 to 1 - 5. The Rockies were guilty of some poor shooting despite dominating many of the exchanges.

In a very tight second half there were only six scores in all as both defenses were well on top. The introduction of Chris Ahern brought some impetus to the Blackrock forward line. He and John Ftzgerald put over two points while Douglas peppered the Blackrock square with high balls. Dylan Stokes was again outstanding at centre back for the Rockies while Shane O'Keeffe and Stephen O'Brien made some crucial interventions.

Paul Beale, who picked up a shoulder injury, Eoin Harris and Alan Cadogan attacked the Blackrock lines at every opportunity however they held firm. Andy O'Connell fired in the Rockies third goal with eight minutes remaining and it was game over. When Peter Cotter, the referee blew up for full time, both teams received a well merited ovation from the enormous crowd which had assembled for the game.

Blackrock scorers: Ryan Dineen 1 - 3 Kevin O'Keeffe 1 - 2 Andy O'Connell 1 - 1 Chris Ahern 0 - 1 and John Fitzgerald 0 - 1

Under 14 Championship Qualifier.

Played at Douglas on Monday 26th May 2007.

Blackrock 2 - 11 Douglas 2 - 11 (after extra time)

This was really the calm after the Feile storm as two fairly tired teams took the field. The fact that the sides could not be separated after 80 minutes was down to the determination of both teams not to be beaten.

The first half consisted of Douglas attacking the Rockies all through, however there was little of the free flowing hurling of the Feile game on a pitch that was rock hard. Douglas played Josh Khra in the defence and his long clearances set up most of the Douglas attacks. The half time score was Douglas 0 - 5 (3 points from frees) Blackrock 0 - 2 (one point from a free and a point from play from David O'Farrell) three points from play tells its own story!

Three points from Kevin O'Keeffe leveled the game by the 40th minute at 0 - 5 each. Then a speculative lob from Eoin Harris plus the glare from the sinking sun caught Paul Delaney the Blackrock keeper for a goal. When Barry Martin put over a "65" soon afterwards the Rockies were left with a mountain to climb. Earlier Paul Delaney had made a brilliant save from a Martin "65".

A further Kevin O'Keeffe free and an Andy O'Connell goal brought the sides level again with 5 minutes left. A further exchange of points from Ryan Dineen and Alan Murray left the sides level once again at the end of normal time.

Two further Kevin O'Keeffe points put the Rockies back in the driving seat in the first period of extra time; however it was cancelled out by an Alan Murray goal from a ground shot. Further points then put Douglas ahead by a three points when up stepped John Fitzgerald to blaze a loose ball to the Douglas net. When Alan Cadogan and Andy O'Connell exchanged points, two exhausted teams were glad to hear the final whistle.

They begin all over again on Thursday 31st May at Church Road at 6.45. For the Rockies, Dylan Stokes again cleared a huge amount of ball; however the forwards seemed unable to create space. An over dependence on points from Kevin O'Keeffe (0 - 7 points, 6 frees) will have to be overcome, especially in the Feile. Paul Beale and Barry Martin played well for Douglas on the night while Alan Cadogan caused lots of problems for the Blackrock defence.

Feile Hurling Final.

played at Pairc Ui Rinn on Sunday 20th May.

Blackrock 3 - 12 Douglas 2 - 6

Following a tremendous match with Douglas on Sunday evening 20th May, the Rockies finally captured the Cork Feile hurling trophy after a wait of some 36 years when they defeated a powerful Douglas team to run out winners. The Rockies had to work hard for their win but drove home to victory in the final ten minutes after Douglas had fought back to leave just a goal between the sides after 45 minutes.

After wins over St Vincents, Glen Rovers and Midleton, this was a great victory for everyone associated with this group of young Rockies and every young player contributed to this success. Victory in this competition had eluded the Rockies in Cork; since they last went on to win All-Ireland Feile success in 1971. Preparations are now underway to ensure the Rockies represent Cork with passion and pride in the 2007 All-Ireland Feile hurling competition in Kilkenny in June.

Cracking start!

The game started at a cracking pace and Blackrock were awarded a penalty by referee James Birmingham after a minute, which Kevin O'Keeffe hammered home. Points quickly followed from John Fitzgerald and Ryan Dineen before Barry Martin pointed from a free for Douglas. Andy O'Connell then sent over a fine point following some good approach work from David O'Farrell. Ryan Martin added a further point from a placed ball for Douglas.

There was then an exchange of points between Ryan Dineen who was doing some great work around the centre of the field and a point from close to the sideline for Douglas from Paul Beale. A high ball into the Blackrock square was batted to the net by the Douglas forwards to leave the scoreline after 20 minutes at 1 - 4 to 1 - 3. Blackrock had several goal chances in this period but a combination of poor striking and the superb Eoin Dolan in goal for Douglas ensured no scores from this period of Rocky dominance.

Kevin O'Keeffe put over a beautiful point from all of 60 metres on the wing to restore Blackrock's lead to two points. Ryan Dineen added a further score (his third), while Kevin O'Keeffe again fired over a point from a free coming up to half time. Rory Scannell of Douglas scored a point from play to leave the interval score at Blackrock 1 - 7 Douglas 1 - 4.

Stephen Murphy had been his usual tenacious self all through the first half, while Shane O'Keeffe had played very consistently. Dylan Stokes was ever busy in the half back line while David O'Farrell's ability to run at the Douglas defence before laying off good ball was a source of some problems for them.

Period of Dominance.

The second half commenced again at a blistering pace, and following a solid run by David O'Farrell, who offloaded to Alan Nolan, the ball broke for Andy O'Connell to drive home to the Douglas net from close in. A further free from Kevin O'Keeffe left it at double scores by the 40th minute. Rory Burke won a lot of ball in the inside line.

Douglas fightback.

The next 5 minutes saw a feisty Douglas fightback. A slight hesitancy in the Blackrock defence allowed Sean Collins to bang in a goal from close in. This was followed by points from Barry Martin and Stephen Crowley as Douglas threatened to over run the Blackrock defence. Josh Khra was moved to centre forward while Paul Beale and Alan Cadogan were winning a lot of ball. A brilliant one handed save from Paul Delaney in goal for the Rockies kept them in it at a crucial moment. Stephen O'Brien added some good relieving clearances while the half back line of Eoin Smith and Darragh O'Keeffe blocked some good approach work by Douglas.

Stokes supreme!

However Dylan Stokes was outstanding in the final ten minutes and made some outstanding interventions. His ability to position himself for the ball is top class and he did a lot to steady the ship. Sean Holland and Ryan Dineen again began to claw their way into the match as Douglas threw everything at the Rockies in a final effort to secure an unprecedented double. David Meaney worked very hard during this period also.

A series of attacks from the Rockies resulted in two points from placed balls from Kevin O' Keeffe. Andy o' Connell broke though twice and popped over two more in the run in. Alan Nolan made certain of the result when he banged home the final goals with 2 minutes left on the clock.

The standard of hurling was very high while the commitment from both teams was absolute in what was a very sporting game very ably refereed by James Birmingham of Bride Rovers.

Blackrock: Paul Delaney, Stephen Murphy, Shane O'Keeffe, Stephen O'Brien, Darragh O' Keeffe, Dylan Stokes,Eoin Smith, David Meaney, Ryan Dineen, (0 - 3) Kevin O'Keeffe, (1 - 5) John Ftzgerald, (0 -1) David O'Farrell, Sean Holland, Rory Burke, Andy O'Connell. (1 - 3) Alan Nolan,(1 - 0), Chris Aherne, James Tyner, Niall Foley, Can Scannell, Brian Dineen, Peter O'Brien,Cian Kavanagh, Chris Hayes, Dean Murphy, Sean Cantwell, Ciaran Moore, Andrew Murphy, Cian O'Halloran, Kieran Moore, Andrew Mintern, Joe Whyte.

Feile Semi Final,

played at Pairc Ui Rinn on Sunday 13th May.

Blackrock 2 - 15 Midleton 1 - 3

This was a very skilful display by the Rockies Feile team when they outplayed a fine Midleton team on Sunday evening 13th May. They now qualify to play Douglas in the Cork Feile final.

Blackrock were ahead from start to finish and had very good displays right throughout the team. Some early points from Ryan Dineen, David O'Farrell and Andy O'Connell put the Rockies in the driving seat early on, however despite having most of the play, a series of wides allowed Midleton to stay in the game. At the interval Blackrock led by 0 - 6 to 0 - 3.

The driving play of Dylan Stokes, David O'Farrell and John Fitzgerald always troubled the Midleton defence while Kevin O'Keeffe who scored eight points in all was very accurate from play and placed balls. Paul Delaney was very solid and confident in goal and brought off some good saves on a murky night. The full back line of Stephen Murphy, Shane O'Keeffe and Stephen O'Brien were always on top and especially good under dropping balls.

It was a comprehensive team performance with everyone on the field and subs such as Alan Nolan, who contributed two goals and a point, Brian Dineen who put over a lovely score, as well as James Tyner and Niall Foley all playing their part in this victory. Killian Burke, Cormac Walsh and Ian Kennefick, who got the Magpies goal as well as Coran Swayne in goal made a fine effort for Midleton.

Feile na nGael

played at Bishopstown on Wednesday 9th May.

Blackrock 4 - 16 Glen Rovers 0 - 8

The strong wind proved to be a major factor in this game of two halves. The Rockies played with the wind in the first half and ran up 4 - 13 to no score by the interval. Try as they could the Glen could not reduce this lead significantly in the second half. David O'Farrell, Kevin O'Keeffe and John Fitzgerald were outstanding in what was a brilliant team performance. David Rea, Daniel Wallace and Colin McCarthy worked hard for the Glen throughout the game.

Under 13 Championship Final

Blackrock 1 - 4 Na Piarsaigh 0 - 5

This was a fine game of hurling played in excellent sunny conditions at Church Road on Saturday 4th November before a large and appreciative crowd. Na Piarsaigh started well but on a day when scores were difficult to obtain they did not make maximum use of their early possession. Likewise Blackrock failed to convert some gilt edged chances later in the half. However what the game lacked in scores it made up for in honest endeavour and excitement from two very committed sides.

Kevin O'Keeffe was very accurate from placed balls and put over a fine shot from a free in the first half. Rory Burke also added a good point from play. The half time score was three points to two in favour of Na Piarsaigh. Kevin O'Keeffe added a further point early in the second half to match a Na Piarsaigh score. Hardworking Blackrock full-forward John Fitzgerald levelled the game at 4 points each. Again the northsiders edged in front with a point from a free.

If goals win matches then the turning point arrived ten minutes from time when O'Keeffe following in a ball managed to get it over the line to leave two points in it. Na Piarsaighs to their credit then laid seige to the Blackrock goal and the final minutes were played out in great excitement, with general play, close in frees, 65s and sideline cuts all landing in the Blackrock square. However from the brilliant Paul Delaney in goal to Cian O'Halloran in the corner, the Rockies held their nerve.

When referee Trevor Lyons called it a day, there were still two points between the sides and this Blackrock team had finally captured the City trophy after four defeats in various finals over the years. This final success was no more than they deserved and the young Rockies mature appreciation of this victory was savoured all the more by the knowledge gained from these earlier heartbreaking defeats.

Blackrock panel: Paul Delaney, Stephen O'Brien,Darragh O'Keeffe,James Tyner, David Meaney,Dylan Stokes,Rory Burke,David O'Farrell,Shane O'Keeffe,Sean Holland Eoin Smith,Kevin O'Keeffe, Andy O'Connell,John Fitzgerald, Cian O'Halloran, Chris Ahern, Cian Scannell, Niall Foley,Joe Whyte, Ciaran Moore, Kieran Moore,Brian Dineen, Chris Hayes and Cian Cavanagh.

Under 13 Championship

Monday 25th / Saturday 30th September

The Under 13s have had a fine run in the championship this past week. They defeated Sarsfields in a match played at Church Road on Monday 25th September last. Cian Kavanagh, Dean Murphy, Cian Scannell, Joe Whyte and Ciaran Moore excelled.

In a hard fought championship match with Bishopstown on Saturday 30th September in miserable conditions at Church Road, the Rockies continued with a 4 - 11 to 2 - 5 victory.

Eoin Smith, Stephen O'Brien, James Tyner and Rory Burke gave great performances in spite of the rain. This panel will now meet St. Finbarrs in the next round.

Under 13 league

played at Church Road Saturday 16th September.

Blackrock 3 - 6 Glen Rovers 1 - 5.

This was a tough hard fought game between two very committed and determined sides. The Rockies led 2 - 2 to 0 - 3 at half time. Paul Delaney in goal was outstanding for the Rockies and he pulled off some remarkable saves in the closing stages as the Glen pressed home their attacks. Chris Ahern following his introduction after half time bagged 1 - 2 points. John Fitzgerald, Rory Burke and David Meaney put in great displays for the Rockies. This panel will travel to the James Stephens tournament in Kilkenny next weekend.

Ger Dineen Tournament.

This prestigious competition in memory of the late Gerard Dineen for the under 13 hurlers was held in glorious sunshine at Church Road on Saturday 9th September. Sixmilebridge just edged out the Rockies in a thrilling final on the scoreline of 3 - 3 to 1 - 8. For the Rockies Dylan Stokes, Kevin O'Keeffe, Andy O'Connell and Darragh O'Keeffe were excellent all afternoon.

Blackrock had earlier overcome Carrigaline in the semi-final while the Clare champions had beaten Douglas. Douglas won the Plate final with a victory over Carrigaline. The quality of the hurling was outstanding during the day and was a fitting tribute to Gerard Dineen who had done such sterling work at Church Road for many decades. Among the guests of honour was Gerard's mother Maureen. The trophy was presented by Liam Dineen on behalf of the Dineen family, while Cork star Wayne Sherlock presented medals to the teams.

The competition was organised by a committee headed by J.P.Devine.

Under 12 (2) League Semi - Final.

Played at Church Road Sunday 16th October.

Blackrock (2) had a comprehensive win over Delaneys in this league semi-final played at Church Road. Alan Nolan in goal for the Rockies put on a brilliant display and played a real captains part in this victory. Conor Cunningham and Matt Bond provided the springboard for the Blackrock success with a great effort from their centre field berths. Fiacre De Faoite, Stephen Corbett, Eoin Hurley and Darragh O'Sullivan also worked very hard throughout in what was a fine performance from these under 11 boys.

Under 12 (1) League Final.

Blackrock 1 --- 3 Na Piarsaigh 1 --- 6.

This was a very close contest and could have gone either way in the end. Level at 2 points each at half time, it was Na Piarsaighs ability to pick off points that was the eventual difference and led to a reversal of the earlier Championship result. Cian Cavanagh put the Rockies ahead with a fine goal after half time, while Blackrock's defence held out for a long time under continuous Piarsaigh pressure. Paul Delaney had a great game in goal for the Rockies while James Tyner put in a massive effort. Chris Ahern also showed determination and skill. Once Piarsaighs got their goal, there was no way back for the brave Rockies who have put in a lot of work in 2005. They can look to 2006 with renewed confidence.

Under 12 League semi-final.

Played at Church Road Sunday 9th October.

A lively Blackrock under 12A side had a comprehensive victory over a tenacious St. Finbarrs outfit at Church Road on Sunday evening and now qualify to meet Na Piarsaigh in the final next Saturday at Togher. Andrew Mintern, Darragh O'Keeffe and Stephen O'Brien played very well for the Rockies.

Tim Dennehy Tournament.

The Blackrock under 12s captured this cup with a tremendous display against James Stephens (Kilkenny) in the final, which they won by 2 --- 9 to 0 ---5. The Rockies had beaten Doora-Barefield (Clare) and Durlas Og in the run-in while the Kilkenny side had overcome Na Piarsaigh after a thriller. Paul Delaney was a proud Rocky captain as he accepted the Tim Dennehy Cup from Paul Tobin. A very good Midleton side had a narrow one-point victory over a brave Douglas team in the Plate competition. The high standard of hurling displayed by all the teams was a feature of this competition. The competition was itself organised by J.P. Devine who has to be complemented for his efforts, as the day was a real showcase for good hurling.

July 2005

Under 12 Hurling Semi-final.

Played at Caherlag  Friday July 9th 2005.

Blackrock 5-8 Midleton 2-3.

The team served up a wonderful display of hurling against a very skilful and well prepared Midleton team. The first half was evenly contested but a lack of accuracy in front of goal cost Blacrock many scores, however at half time the score was Blackrock 2-4 to Midleton’s 1-3. Midleton were to add only 1 goal in the second half while Blackrock scored 3-4 to run out convincing winners. Indeed but for some superb saves from the Midleton goalkeeper to goal tally could have been higher. Midleton also missed some good scoring opportunities but on the night the superior physical strength of the Blackrock team aided by a strong second-half breeze was the difference between the sides. Team captain James Tyner at corner back led by example with a powerful display of direct hurling, Erbie Underwood showed some lovely skills while Shane O Keefe and Dylan Stokes were excellent throughout.

We wish them well in the upcoming final.

June 2005

Under 12 City Hurling Final.

Played at Church Road Wednesday 29th June 2005.

Blackrock 4 --- 5 St Finbarrs 0 --- 1.

After 15 minutes of this game the scoreline was one point each and if anything the Barrs had played the better hurling.  Eoin Finn had converted a 65 while Shane O’Keeffe had equalised after 12 minutes. Then a high ball into the Barr’s square was doubled over the bar by full-forward John Fitzgerald. This score seemed to ignite the Rockies and points from Kevin O’Keeffe and Shane O’Keeffe followed. A first time pull from Kevin O’Keeffe sent goalkeeper James Mc Donnell the wrong way to leave the half time score at Blackrock 1 --- 4 St.Finbarrs 0 --- 1.

Two early goals from Andy O’Connell and John Fitzgerald in the second half killed off the game as a contest. Erbie Underwood got in a lot of good hurling, while Shane O’Keeffe and John Fitzgerald displayed real penetration at they repeatedly attacked the Blues goal. The Barrs were ably led by Eoin Finn at centreback and Philip O’Neill in the corner.  Young Barr’s keeper James McDonnell came to their rescue at crucial stages.

John Fitzgerald sent another bullet to the net with 5 minutes left on the clock and despite some brave Barr’s efforts to get goals, their luck was out. For the Rockies, James O’Brien and James Tyner were superb in defence, especially in the opening quarter of an hour. John Fitzgerald displayed immense courage under the ball and no little skill in converting his scores. St. Finbarrs played some fine hurling but lacked penetration up front in terms of scores.  A good performance from this Rockies outfit which now advance to the county stages of this competition.

Under 12 Hurling Championship Semi Final.

Blackrock 4 --- 8 Na Piarsaigh 4 --- 5.

This enthralling game of hurling played at Church Road on Friday 24th June will live long in the memory. The Rockies were hit by a whirlwind of excellent goals in the opening minutes and were 3 goals down by the 12th minute. Two points from frees by Kevin O'Keeffe and goals from Andy O'Connell brought the Rockies back into the game yet only to be caught by a further brilliant Na Piarsaigh goal in the 20th minute. By half time the northsiders were 10 points ahead on the scoreline of 4 --- 3 to 1 --- 2 and looked invincible. Only for Blackrock keeper, Paul Delaney who brought off at least a half dozen excellent saves in this half, Na Piarsaigh would have been out of sight.

What followed next was amazing! Super cool Kevin O'Keeffe reduced the lead point by point from frees some of which were very difficult angles, as the Na Piarsiagh defence was forced to concede as wave after wave of Rockies attacked. When he also scored a goal from a 35 meter free to leave the scoreline at 4 --- 3 to 2 --- 7, with 8 minutes to go we were set for a grandstand finish. Kevins efforts seemed to inspire his colleagues and with Darragh O'Keeffe and Dylan Stokes in command in defence, the tide swung in Blackrocks favour. When Eoin Smith goaled to level the match, Na Piarsaigh bravely hit back with two points.

A marvellous solo run by David O'Farrell resulted in a beautiful point for the Rockies. The excitement was at fever pitch and both sides had near misses in the final minutes before O'Keeffe (who finished with 2 --- 7) tore through the Piarsaigh defence to rattle the net. When referee David Kickham signalled the end, players, mentors and a large gathering of spectators had witnessed an absolutely incredible game from two clubs who seem to bring out the best hurling in each other. Blackrock were as surprised by their victory as Na Piarsaigh were wondering how this one got away.

Under 12B league.

Blackrock 3 --- 11 Delaneys Nil.

Played in warm sunshine at Church Road on Thursday 9th June, the Rockies displayed some of their best hurling this year to overcome a well organised Delaney's outfit. Blackrock were captained by Stephen Corbett on the evening and their defence, especially keeper Alan Nolan was outstanding. Despite Delaney's youngsters best efforts they could not penetrate the Blackrock defence of Cavin Heaphy, Luke Leahy and Jimmy Bourke on the half back line. These Rockies ensured a constant supply of possession to the forwards where Conor Cunningham, Aodhan O' Hourigan and Peter Fitzgerald scored goals during the game. Others to star for the Rockies were Mark Quirke, Fiachra White, Stephen Murphy and Callum Stewart- Crowe.

May 2005

Under 12B league.

Blackrock 3 --- 6 Mayfield 1 --- 5.

The Blackrock under 11s had a great battle in the League against a very good Mayfield side on 30th May at Mayfield. Played in excellent conditions before an appreciative crowd, the young Rockies captained by Fiachra de Faoite built up a substantial lead in the first half. Conor Cunningham and Eoin Hurley converted the goals while Ryan Dineen contributed a number of points from frees. Mayfield attacked very strongly in the second half however the Blackrock defence in which Kevin Ring, Kieran Howick, Jamie Ryan and Niall O'Leary were prominent fought hard to keep them out. Gavin Heaphy in particular cleared a lot of ball.

Under 12B League.

Blackrock vs Nemo Rangers -

23rd May 2005

Blackrock 12Bs enjoyed a fine win against Nemo Rangers on Monday 23rd May at the Nemo grounds. Despite the poor weather conditions a good standard of hurling was displayed by both teams.

The defence again held firm in the face of a strong challenge by Nemo Rangers with Stephen Corbett and Kieran Howick ensuring that a clean sheet was kept by Niall O'Leary in the goal. Ryan Dineen, Mark Quirke, Callum Stewart - Crowe and Darragh O'Sullivan were prominent in attack and Blackrock ran out worthy winners with a scoreline of Blackrock 3-3 - Nemo Rangers 1 --- 0.

Under 12B League.

Blackrock vs Brian Dillons

25th May 2005.

Blackrock finished off a busy week in the U 12 B league with a match in Church road against Brian Dillons. The match was played in what can only be described as atrocious weather conditions - however both sides overcame the conditions to serve up a fine enjoyable match for the drenched spectators.

Black rock's Captain Gavin Heaphy elected to play with the wind in the first half. Peter O'Brien and Stephen Murphy ensured a steady supply to an effective forward line consisting of, among others, Cian Papizon, Robert Noonan, Sean Kearney and Aodhan O'Hourigan.

In the second half against a strong wind the Blackrock defence held firm with Gavin Heaphy, Ryan Meally and Jimmy Burke very prominent.

The scoreline of Blackrock 6 - 4 - Brian Dillons 2 - 0 ensured that the unbeaten run of the Blackrock U 11 team continues.

Under 12 League.

Played at Church Road Friday 20th May,

Blackrock 1 1 --- 3 St.Finbarrs 1 --- 3.

Both sides gave 100% commitment to this game. The Barrs took full advantage with the wind in the first half and led by 1--- 3 to a point after a tough first half.

However on the resumption the Rockies fought back like tigers to salvage a draw. David O'Farrell picked off a fine goal while Cian Scannell, Liam Cashman, Andrew Mintern, Joe White and Dean Murphy excelled for the Rockies.

Under 12 League.

Played at the Glen Field Saturday 14th May.

Blackrock 1   3 --- 6 Glen Rovers 2 --- 3.

This turned out to be a very hard fought match with both sides giving everything. The Rockies turned over 4 points to the good following a superlative display from Erbie Underwood who was man-of –the –match. Blackrock pulled away in the second half with Kevin O’Keeffe, Eoin Smith and Stephen O’Brien standing out in what was an excellent team display. The Glen fought to the end and scored two fine goals late on.

Under 12 League,

played at Church Road Saturday 7th May.

Blackrock 2 --- 4  Carrigaline 0 --- 5

This game was a very close sporting encounter between two very competitive teams. Kevin O’Keeffe scored a very important goal in the first half for the Rockies which allowed them to lead at the interval. He also picked off some fine scores from frees. Highlight of the first half was a wonderful solo effort by Sean Holland who went right through the Carrigaline defence to convert a fine point. An early goal in the second half from John Fitzgerald ensured the Rockies had a lead of 5 points which they never lost. Cian Scannell, Shane O’Keeffe, David Meaney and James Tyner at full back had good games for the Rockies.

The William Ahern Hurling Tournament.

With the All-Ireland hurling frenzy gripping the Rebel city, the local Blackrock hurling club has been busy planning for its mini All-Ireland under 11 hurling competition. The cream of the under 11 hurlers from clubs in Cork, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny will feature.

Named in honour of the late William Ahern, this prestigious hurling tournament will be held at Church Road on next Saturday September 18th starting at 12.15 pm.

It will feature teams from Kilkenny such as James Stephens; Roanmore and Lismore from Co Waterford, Durlas Og, Co Tipperary, Sarsfields, Midleton, Na Piarsaigh from Limerick City as well as the Blackrock under 11 team which went all the way recently to the under 12 B County Final.

There will be a total of 17 matches played over a five hour period and some of the finest young hurlers in the country will be displaying their skill work. This blitz has been organised by the under-age section of the Blackrock club and is coordinated by the indefatigable J.P. Devine, who has left no stone unturned to provide an appropriate stage for these young hurlers to perform.

So for any local hurling fans who are not completely hurled out due to All-Ireland mania, a stroll down to Church Road next Saturday will be rewarded by witnessing some of the next generation of hurling stars who will surely grace Croke Park on All-Ireland day within the next decade. What better way to spend a Saturday afternoon?
